Green Trees - My Own Short Stories
Green Trees by Leah Schmitt She’s just leaving the house and is on her way to the little cafe she’s supposed to meet her friends at. Her hazel hair is flowing in the wind and her green eyes are sparkling with excitement. The sun is shining bright on her pretty, tan face and there is a fresh breeze coming from the ocean. She can hear children laughing and playing in the sand as she gets on her bike with a smile on her face, listening to music. She gets off her bike walking over to the cafe with long legs fixing her long wavy hair that got tangled from the wind. Her friends have all already arrived as she gets off of her bike and makes her way over to them greeting all of them happily. They talk about everything and laugh about everything and then make their way over to the park. They sit down on the bright green grass with drinks in their hand and enjoy the warm sun on their faces as they discuss what their plans were for the rest of the summer. The trees surrounding them are bright green and full of leaves. The birds inside of them are chirping loudly and the bees are buzzing around them. The beautiful brightly colored flowers leave an incredible scent in the air and make the entire scene look like a fairytale. The 7 friends spend multiple hours there talking about nothing and everything, just enjoying the beautiful warm summer day together. Just before sunset they decide to go to the beach to meet a few other friends and just stay there for the rest of the night and get some dinner later. The little group is walking towards the beach just in time to watch the sunset with their friends and go for a swim in the crystal clear blue water. As the sun is setting the blue sky turns into a gorgeous lilac mixed with pink that looks as if someone had drawn onto the sky. Sydney and her friends end up spending the entire night there laughing about silly things and just enjoying each others company and the night. She’s happy and having an amazing time with her friends. Next up is her vacation and then the summer is nearly over. A few weeks later she is again spending a day with her friends but this time something is different. The usual warm sun is covered by dark clouds. The laughter is getting quieter and quieter. Sydney is sitting in the same cafe with her friends but she isn’t enjoying herself. She seems to be somewhere else. Not there with them. Lost in her thoughts. The clouds are turning darker and darker making the sun disappear completely. The rain is starting to fall. It’s falling on the bright green trees. The yellow flowers. The bikes standing outside, the cars and the benches. There is no laughter heard outside. No children playing by the beach as Sydney is making her way home. It’s just around 6 o’clock but Sydney decided that she would rather go home now than later. She walks into the house quickly saying hi to her parents and then disappearing into her room. She puts some music on and just sits by the window and watches the rain fall. There are raindrops all over the window running down the glass like tears running down someone’s cheek. They are all running at the same speed except for one. It’s behind them all, by itself. It’s getting darker outside. Sydney’s playlist is about to end. She decides that it makes no sense to do something now, it’s already late and she has plans tomorrow so she goes to bed. Tucks herself into the warm sheets and hopes that tomorrow it will be sunny again and that it will feel like summer again. The sun is rising, turning the sky into a peachy color making it look like an ocean of pink and peach colors mixed with light blue. Sydney wakes up just before her alarm because of the birds chirping outside and because she’s getting really warm under the blanket. It’s a nice summer sunny day almost as if the day yesterday had never happened. Today there is a bike ride and a picnic somewhere along the way with her best friend on the agenda. While she’s getting ready, Sydney is blasting the lyrics of one of her favorite songs out loud and enjoying herself a lot, excited for the rest of the day. After 20 minutes the doorbell rings and Kylie is already waiting for her in front of the door. They both get onto their bikes and go. They drive past flower fields with hundreds of pink flowers all together and all next to each other like a huge safe family. The two of them spend the entire way laughing about everything and just admiring the beautiful landscapes around them. While they enjoyed the scenery Kylie spotted the perfect place for a picnic and they decided to stop there. They’re both eating sandwiches now while talking to each other about their vacations and everything else they did over the summer, sitting under a green tree. They both don’t notice how long they’ve been sitting there for when the sun slowly starts to set and they get on their bikes as fast as possible and make their way home laughing and talking along the way. What Sydney doesn’t know is that this is going to be one of the last summer days as she goes to bed and falls asleep with a smile on her face. The next morning she wakes up. She makes her way over to the window and opens the blinds up. The sky is completely grey today, covered with nearly black clouds. There is a fresh breeze outside and she can hear thunder from far away. Sydney had plans today to go swimming but has to cancel them now. She doesn’t feel like going outside. She is just going to snuggle up in bed and do nothing. Every time she looks outside she expects the sun. But all she sees is the depressing darkness outside along with the clouds. Thoughts are racing around her head. She thinks and thinks and can’t stop. She thinks about the summer. And her memories. And her friends. She thinks about everything they did. And about what they can’t do in the colder months. The next few days she doesn’t leave the house at all. Too scared that as soon as she leaves it she’s going to move on from the summer. That she’s going to forget all of the amazing memories. It keeps on getting colder and colder. It rains more often now and she barely still hears from her friends. She’s missing out and she knows it. But Sydney can’t bring herself to even leave her bed. She doesn’t want the summer to end just yet. She wants to go swimming with her friends again. She wants to hang out by the beach. Wants to go back to the park with the bright green trees and colorful flowers. Wants all those moments back. She doesn’t know what to do. Or what to think. Doesn’t want to leave the house but wants to see her friends. But she does know that she doesn’t want the summer to end. Ever. She looks outside. Suddenly she is terrified. What if the fall is going to be horrible? What if something bad is going to happen? What if someone dies? What if Kylie leaves? What if she moves away? She has to get out of this house. Sydney grabs her phone quickly and runs out the door. She’s on her way to Kylie’s house and stops abruptly as she passes by the park they were at earlier on in the summer. By the park that holds so many memories and fun times with her friends. The once brightly-green colored trees are now orange and yellow. There are leaves all over the ground. She stares at it all and can’t keep herself from finding it beautiful. She turns around and makes her way home with a huge smile on her face as the warm sun and the cool fall breeze hits her face.
